Chronic backflow of pepsin or hcl back into the esophagus from the stomach can cause gastroesophageal reflux diseases.
Pepsinogen consists of a single polypeptide chain that is about approx 42,000 DA. It belongs to the endopeptidase family of aspartic proteinases. The aspartic protease is an acidic protease because it acts in pH between 1.5 and 5. The human lining of the stomach secretes mainly 4 types of pepsinogen which are pepsinogen I, pepsinogen II, cathepsin E and cathepsin D.
