Veld means farmland among Africans and is a colloquial term meaning cultivated land. The grasslands are vast grasslands, with the prairie and Lesotho highlands in the east and south, and the Kalahari Desert in the west.

Although the agricultural development in this region is not as extensive as in other parts of the world, there are large-scale commercial and small-scale farming activities, and the mining industry is also extensive.
