Hint: Usually the charge of an atom will indicate the oxidation state or valence electron of the atom. If the outermost shell is completely filled or half – filled, then the atom becomes highly stable. The most common charges are always equal to the maximum stability of the atom. And the charge is a preserved property of definite subatomic particles.
Complete answer:
As we know that a charged atom is known as an ion. And the charges may be positive or negative. The atom contains three subatomic particles, which are protons, neutrons and electrons. The neutrons and the protons are located inside the nucleus. But the electrons are bound around the nucleus in an orbital. The number of electrons and protons are the same. The neutron does not have any charge. And the charge of protons is equal to positive and the electrons have a negative charge.
If two atoms formed by an ionic bond, loss or gain of valence electrons takes place to obtain the stable electronic configuration. If the atom loses the electrons, there is a formation of ions with positive charge. And if it gains the electron, it attains the negative charge. The ion with positive charge is known as cation and negatively charged ion is known as anion.
Note:
We have to remember that the charge is a physical property and it is responsible for the force present in an electromagnetic field. And it is a physical property which is present in an element and it will attain by a force when the matter undergoes any reactions like gaining or accepting the electrons. The charges are mainly in two types which are positive charge and negative charge. Same charges will always repel each other and the unlike charges will always attract each other.
