Obstacles such as high salinity, frequent tidal flooding, and low environmental oxygen levels can be controlled by implementing a number of physiological adaptations to Mangrove plants. Coastal areas are protected by the mangrove swamps from Tsunamis, erosions, and storm surges which usually occur during hurricanes. The massive root systems of mangroves are efficient at slowing down tidal water enough so that its sediment is deposited when the tide comes in. It is also efficient at dissipating wave energy. In this fashion, mangroves build their own environment.
