Hint: The soft organs located within the human body are covered by a fibrous outer covering with a layer of fluid in between to absorb the shock caused during some accident and to prevent damage. Some of the organs having the outer layer are lungs, heart, and brain.
Complete answer:
The outer covering of the heart is known as Pericardium. It is fibrous in nature. The pericardium can be divided into three parts. The outer fibrous pericardium, parietal pericardium in between and the inner visceral pericardium. Thus the visceral pericardium is a double layered membrane seen surrounding the heart and is the innermost layer of the pericardium.
The visceral layer lines the outer surface of the heart. And the layer has pericardial fluid on the outer side that helps in shock absorbance during some kinds of injuries. And the pericardium functions as a mechanical protective layer for the heart as well as the surrounding blood vessels. And the layer also reduces friction on the surface of Heart.
Note: The disease state caused due to inflammation of the pericardium is known as Pericarditis. It is a fatal disease if not diagnosed at an earlier stage and can even cause serious after effects. Pericarditis can be due to infections in the pericardium, and can be treated using antibiotics. An early symptom of pericarditis is the presence of chest pain, low grade fever or an increased heart rate. The other causes of pericarditis are trauma, tumors, autoimmune diseases, cancer, etc. The disease can be diagnosed through ECG, Echo or an MRI scan.
