Complete step by step answer:
Before the printing invented in China by woodblock and movable type in Europe, all documents were handwritten. If we look at history, manuscripts were produced in the form of scrolls or volumen. Manuscripts were produced on the vellum and other parchments, and on paper also. In Russia in the eleventh-century bark birch was introduced. In India, the palm leaf manuscript, with a distinctively long rectangular kind of shape, was used in ancient times till the nineteenth century. Paper was spread from China with the Islamic world to Europe in the fourteenth century, and from the late 15th century had largely replaced parchment for many purposes. Many of the professional type copies were made one by one continuously by the scribes as a scriptorium, each made a single copy from the original that was read aloud. In reality, all the books were in manuscript form. In China, and in other parts of East Asia, woodblock type printing was used for the books from the seventh century.
Islamic world and also in the West, all the books were manuscripts that are handwritten, until the invention of type printing which is movable in 1450.

Note: Manuscripts provide the evidence of human activity that occurs naturally during the course of one's individual's or an organization of life. Basically, scholars used these manuscripts.
