The UN Educational, Science and Cultural Association (UNESCO) was launched on 16 November 1945. UNESCO comprises 195 Members and 8 Associate Members and was governed by the General Conference and the Executive Board. The Secretariat, headed by the Director-General shall enforce the decisions of these two bodies. It has more than 50 sub-branches around the world.

UNESCO Headquarters is situated at 7 Place de Fontenoy, Paris, France. The building was completed on 3 November 1958. The construction of the Y-shaped was planned by the three architects. Nicknamed the 'three-pointed star,' the entire structure sits on seventy-two concrete columns. There are three more buildings that have finished the headquarters complex. The second house affectionately known as the "accordion" houses an egg-shaped hall with a plywood ceiling where the plenary sessions of the General Conference are held. The third building is in the shape of a cube. Last but not least the fourth building consists of two office floors hollowed out below the street level around six narrow sunken courtyards. Buildings housing numerous outstanding works of art are available to the public.

UNESCO aims to build the requirements for interaction among civilizations, cultures and peoples, with an emphasis on concern for shared values. It will be through such interaction that the world will pursue universal visions of sustainable growth, comprising protection of human rights, shared respect and poverty alleviation, both of which are at the core of UNESCO's role and initiatives.
