Hint: Chemical bonds are formed when the electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom interact. There are forces of attraction which bind the atoms together. There are three types of bonds present between the atoms i.e. ionic, covalent and coordinate bonds.
Complete answer:
A chemical bond is an interaction between the atoms, ions or molecules that results in the formation of chemical compounds. This bond formation happens due to the electrostatic forces of attraction between the oppositely charged ions or may be due to the equal sharing of electrons between the two atoms.
There are three types of chemical bond present between the two atoms. They can be ionic, covalent and coordinate bonds.
Ionic bond is formed by the complete transference of the electrons from one atom to another. The atom which loses one or more electrons, they become cation i.e. a positively charged ions whereas the atom which gains one or more electrons, they become anion i.e. a negatively charged ions.
A covalent bond is formed by the equal sharing of electron pairs from both the atoms which are participating in chemical bond formation. The pair of electrons which are shared between the atoms is called a shared pair or bond pair.
Coordinate bond- It is also called dative covalent bond or dipolar bond. It is a type of alternate covalent bond which is formed by the sharing of electrons from a single atom. Both electrons are shared by the same atom.
Therefore, a Covalent bond is formed by equal sharing of an electron pair.
Note:
Covalent bonds are very powerful bonds that exist between two atoms. They do not result in the formation of new electrons. Covalent bonds are also called molecular bonds. Also, covalent compounds do not dissolve in water.
