Atmosphere around the earth surface is divided into 5 layers
These layers can be said as a series of spheres lying around the earth surface. The layer that is closest to the earth's surface is called the troposphere. Second layer above the troposphere is the stratosphere, third layer is mesosphere, fourth layer is thermosphere and the fifth layer is called exosphere. These 5 layers are also called thermal layers. Thermal signifies the temperature gradient or thermal profile. These thermal layers are further divided as Homosphere and Heterosphere. In homosphere there is uniform mixing of gases and in heterosphere there is non-uniform mixing of gases, the three lower spheres i.e. troposphere, stratosphere and mesosphere falls under the category of homosphere whereas the thermosphere and exosphere comes under heterosphere. . These layers have different role compositions and are situated at different heights from the earth surface.
Troposphere is the layer that is closest to the earth and it can be discussed depending on
Depth/thickness, Temperature and composition of troposphere. On an average troposphere occurs about ${\text{10 Km}}$ above the earth surface, Height of the troposphere varies while moving from the equator towards the pole. At equator the thickness of the troposphere is different from the thickness of the troposphere at the pole. The thickness is deeper at the equator whereas shallower at the pole.

Troposphere is the portion of the earth’s atmosphere where all weather takes place. ${\text{99 % }}$ of water vapour in the atmosphere is found in the troposphere and ${\text{75 % }}$ of atmospheric air is present in the troposphere. The air pressure drops, temperature gets cooler while moving higher in the troposphere. The decrease in temperature with height is the result of decreasing pressure.

Note: The lowest layer of our atmosphere is troposphere starting from ground level it extends upward to about ${\text{10km}}$ above the sea level. In troposphere the temperature gets colder as the distance above the earth increases, by about ${\text{6}}{\text{.5}}{{\text{ }}^{\text{o}}}{\text{C}}$ per kilometre.
