How has the traditional use of wind and water energy been modified for our convenience?

Hint: Wind and water energy are types of renewable energy. Renewable energy is an energy which is produced from natural processes and it is continuously replenished. Few examples of renewable sources of energy are sunlight, water, wind, tides, geothermal heat, and biomass. The energy obtained from wind is known as wind energy. Similarly the energy produced from water is water energy.

a) Windmills – Earlier they were used to harness wind energy in order to mechanical work like lifting/drawing water from a well.
Now, windmills are used to generate electricity in which the kinetic energy of the wind is harnessed and converted into electricity.
b) Water – Earlier they were used for drinking, washing and also for other daily chores.
Now, water energy can be used to generate electricity. Dams were constructed on the river in order to generate electricity. Waterfalls are used as a source of potential energy which was being used to get converted into electricity with the help of turbines.

One drawback of renewable energy is that it is difficult to generate the quantities of electricity that are as large as those produced by fossil fuel generators.
