Rajendra I is known as Rajendra Chola I. He was born in 947 CE in a small district of Tamil Naidu in Thanjavur. He ascended the throne in 1014 C.E. after his father. During his rule, he extended the boundaries of the Chola Dynasty in all four directions. He conquers the Northside up to the bank of River Ganga and up to the Indian Ocean in the Westside and also the part of South-East Asia. He attacked many countries like Sri Lanka, Maldives, Thailand and Cambodia and successfully ruled there. He was assigned the title ‘Gangai Konda' because he dominated all the kingdoms near River Ganga. Also, he formed a new city and named it ‘Gangaikonda Cholapuram'. He was considered as the most powerful ruler of his time. He conquered the Western Ganga dynasty of Mysore which had ruled for about 1000 years in Mysore. In 1018 he overthrew the empire of Pandya and Chera Perumal. Rajendra Chola with the help of his military defeated the Somavamsi Dynasty, the Mahipala Dynasty, The Kamboja Dynasty and many more and made the Chola Dynasty the most expanded and dominating in the whole world.
