Hint: Sultan Fateh Ali Saheb Tipu, popularly known as Tipu ruled the state of Mysore 1782-1799. He was also known as ‘Tiger of Mysore’.

Complete Step by Step answer: A series of Anglo Mysore wars was fought in the last three decades of the 18th century. In the fourth war, Tipu Sultan was defeated by the British East India Company, the Maratha empire and the Nizam of Hyderabad. The alliance of Mysore with the French under Napoleon Bonaparte, posed a threat to the British who attacked the state from all four sides.
Tipu Sultan’s army was outnumbered by the British. Tipu Sultan had 35,000 troops whereas the British had 60,0000. The Marathas invaded from the North. The English considered Tipu Sultan as a tyrant while in India he is hailed as a freedom fighter. He was called the ‘Tiger of Bengal’ but historians have different views as to why he was called so. Some say that he had come face to face with a tiger and killed it. According to the legend the tiger had killed his friend and at that point the gun was not working. Other theories suggest that because of his fascination for the animal, he was called so.

Hence, Option A is the correct answer.

Note: Tipu Sultan is regarded as a freedom fighter and although he was said to be secular, he did oppress Hindus and Christians. His troops wore badges with an impression of tiger on them and the handle of his sword also was in the form of a snarling tired. He was a very famous ruler and administrator.
