Chromatography is used in two separate non volatile mixtures. Adsorption is the process in which one molecule known as adsorbate gets absorbed on the other molecule that is known as adsorbent. The term adsorbate and adsorbent are analogous to solute and solvent in a solution.
Chromatography takes place on a sheet of aluminium foil or plastic on which a thin layer of adsorbent material is placed. The adsorbent material mainly used is Aluminium oxide, cellulose or silica gel because they are good adsorbent. It is based on the relative affinity of the compounds. There are two phases in a chromatography, one is the mobile phase and the other one is stationary phase. Mobile phase moves over the stationary phase. If a material has more affinity towards stationary phase then it will move slower and the one that is high affinity towards mobile phase will move faster. So, this will create a separation between the mixtures. We will get separate spots for the separate components in a mixture.Hence thin layer chromatography is a type of adsorption chromatography
