When a chlorine atom combines with the hydrogen atom to produce hydrogen chloride in presence of sunlight, a high amount of heat energy is released. This reaction is given as-

Since this reaction is exothermic in nature, it is not carried out in direct sunlight. In direct sunlight, the formed product hydrogen chloride gets protonated which results in an explosion.
This reaction is a free radical substitution reaction in which the chlorine radical reacts with hydrogen radical to form hydrogen chloride. So to prevent the explosion, the container in which the reaction occurs is placed only for a short time in presence of sunlight then after some time the container is removed from sunlight and placed in a dark room. Since the chlorine radical was already formed so the reaction continues even in the absence of sunlight.
