The peacock throne was constructed by Shah Jahan in 1628 on the day of his coronation. Skilled craftsmen and artisans took seven years to finish the construction of the throne. Some historians even think that it cost twice as much as the Taj Mahal. It had more than 2500 pounds of gold and 500 pounds of precious gemstones.
The name of the throne was derived from its design and structure that featured bejeweled peacocks. It contains magnificent gems like the Timur ruby and the Akbar Shah, the Jahangir as well as the Koh-i-Noor diamond. An estimate of 116 emeralds, 108 rubies, and several other gems were used in its construction.

There were silver steps leading up to a six feet by four feet platform. The platform was elevated about twenty five inches high over four gold encased feets. An arched silk canopy surrounded the platform and was supported by the twelve gold columns, which were decorated by a lot of pearls.
