Hint: The northern plains is a riverine region with the fertile soil, favourable climate, flat surface rendering possible the construction of roads and railways, and slow moving rivers. All these factors have made the Northern plains crucial. This is the reason why it is a vastly populated region in India.

-The northern plain has been formed by the depositional work of the three major river systems, namely the Sutlej, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra along with their tributaries.
-Northern plains which is the most fertile land is a depositional plain because it was initially a basin like structure. It is made up of sediments brought by several rivers flowing from Himalayas through these plains. The soil brought by the rivers is mainly the alluvial soil that is very fertile. This is a proof of deposition.
-This region is most favourable for human settlement due to fertile soil, perennial rivers and favourable climate. Many multi-purpose dams have been constructed. The rivers here are navigable which enable easy transportation and thus, promote trade and commerce.
