The feminine housefly, generally mates for once in their lifetime and then they store the sperm for future use. It lays eggs in batches which are about 100 in number, on the dead and decaying organic matter like feces, carrion, or food waste. These eggs then hatch into a whit larvae named as maggots. After a duration of 2-5 days, these larvae then get metamorphosed into pupae that are reddish brown in appearance, and approximately 8 millimeters in length.

The female housefly gets matured after 24 hours, whereas the male housefly takes 16 hours. The entire lifecycle to be an adult housefly takes about 10 days to complete. But in adverse conditions it could even take months to do so.
