Hint: Geographers, more specifically Cartographers have separated the Earth into a grid of imaginary lines that runs both in northern and southern hemispheres as well as in east and west.

Complete answer: The lines that run horizontally around the earth are known as latitudes whereas the lines running in east and west are longitudes. The range of the distance between the north or south of the equator is the latitude. With the help of 180 imaginary lines, these latitudes are measured that form circles around the surface of the earth east and west. These imaginary lines are parallel to the equator.
The Equator is the 0 degrees latitude, which is an imaginary line that circles the earth. This zero degree latitude separates the earth into two equal hemispheres. The equator lies exactly halfway between the two reference points, the North pole and South pole. The part of the globe that lies in the north is known as the northern hemisphere and the part that lies in the south is known as the southern hemisphere. The other important parallels of latitudes are the Tropic of Cancer, the Tropic of Capricorn, the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle.
The other set of circles which is drawn through the poles, running from North pole to South pole is known as the meridians of longitude or simply a meridian. The equator also cuts the meridians into two equal halves and it is defined as the zero degree longitude.

Thus, the correct answer is option (A).

Note: The parallels are circles that differ in length. The length of each parallel decreases gradually from the equator to the poles. The poles are just reference points and the longest parallels of latitude are the equator and the 60 degree parallel is half the length of the equator.
