Hint: The Kadambas were an ancient and royal dynasty of Karnataka, India. They ruled northern Karnataka and the Konkan from Banavasi in what we call Uttara Kannada district today. The kingdom was founded by Mayurasharma in c. 345.
Complete answer: Mayurasharma defeated the armies of the Pallavas of Kanchi and claimed sovereignty. Kadamba power was at its peak during the reign of Kakusthavarma.
The Kadambas belonged to the Western Ganga Dynasty. From the middle of the 6th century, the dynasty ruled as a vassal of larger Kannada empires, the Chalukya and the Rashtrakuta empires for more than five hundred years. The Kadambas were the first indigenous dynasty to use Kannada which is the language of soil at an administrative level.
Let us study the given options.
Option a- Talakadu is a city situated in the Mysore district of Karnataka. It was the capital for king Harivarma and not the Kadambas dynasty. So, this is incorrect.
Option b- Hanagal is a historic town in the Haveri district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It was once the capital when Kadambas were vassals of larger dynasties. But when Kadambas became powerful they shifted their capital elsewhere. This is an incorrect answer.
Option c- Banavasi is an ancient town in Uttara Kannada in the state of Karnataka. It is the oldest town. It was the capital of Kadambas who ruled the entire Karnataka for almost two centuries. This is the right option.
Option d- Shravanabelagola is a town located near Hassan district of Karnataka which is famous for its 58 feet statue of Gommateshwara. It is considered as the world’s largest monolithic statue. It was not the capital of Kadambas and is the wrong option.
Therefore, option c is correct.
Note: Kadambotsava is a festival which is celebrated every year by the Government of Karnataka in honour of the Kadambas kingdom. Also, the Indian state government of Goa owned bus service is also named after the Kadambas dynasty and is known as Kadamba Transport Corporation.
