Veerapandiya Kattabomman was a Telegu and he belonged to the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He refused the leadership of the British rule and declared a war against them. However, the ruler of Padukottai turned him into the hands of the British and Kattaboman was hanged to death at the age of 39. He belonged to the Kambalatar caste. Kattabomman was regarded as the Robin Hood in the local folk tales. He was also the subject of the Kummi dance form. The place where he was executed has turned into a local shrine.
