 Panchayat Raj is the oldest system of local government in India. The word Raj means rule and panchayat means assembly of 5. In the old times, panchayats consisted of wise and respected elderly men chosen and accepted by the local community. These assemblies settled disputes between individuals traditionally.
The leader of the Panchayat was usually called Mukhiya, Sarpanch or Pradhan. It is an elected and acknowledged position. The modern panchayat in India is way too different from the traditional system.
Recently, the panchayat in my nearby village area took up the task to provide sanitation and hygienic kits to every household. This kit included a mask, hand sanitizer, a pack of sanitary napkins, vitamin C tablets and a bottle of hand wash.
This was done to ensure that every single person in their area was well equipped with necessary things to not contract the Corona Virus. Poor people usually don’t have access to these safety measures or they lack knowledge. It was the duty of the Panchayat to work towards the social health in the village.
The funding was done by diverting the money from the Panchayat Welfare Fund and the state government also allocated funds to the Panchayat as it was the immediate need of the hour.
Yes, the work was efficiently completed and within a week, every member of the village was equipped with the hygiene kit.
