Hydrogen is present on earth in both free- state and in combined state.
In free- state, hydrogen gas is found in traces in the atmosphere or inside the earth’s crust. Hydrogen gas is present in abundance on the sun and other stars. It is the source of the stars’ energies caused by the nuclear fission of hydrogen atoms into a helium.
In a combined state, hydrogen is found in many various substances like water, acids, minerals, organic materials like fossil fuels, etc. The natural gas that is released from coal mines, Oil wells and volcanoes contains hydrogen invariably in both free- state and combined state.

Fossil fuels like natural gas are used to release hydrogen gas from their hydrocarbon molecules by the reformation of the fuels. It is a very efficient and effective way for the production of hydrogen gas and is known as natural gas reforming. Methane is a constituent of natural gas and thus it can be used for the production of hydrogen when undergoing processes like steam methane reformation and partial oxidation.
In the process of steam methane reformation, methane is made to react with steam under high pressure which produces carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas. The carbon monoxide produced further can be used to produce hydrogen gas through the water gas shift reaction with water.
