Hint: Spinal cord is the major region of the central nervous system . In an adult human being, the spinal cord is about 42-45cm long and 2 cm thick. Spinal cord is a glistening white cord which runs from the base of the brain down through the backbone.
Medulla oblongata connects brains and spinal cord and hence spinal cord originates from the medulla.
Brain is divided into three parts namely forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain and brainstem. Medulla is the part of the brainstem that is the posterior most part that connects various parts of the brain and spinal cord.
Complete answer:
CEREBRUM:- it is the most prominent portion of the brain. It forms the major part of the brain and consists of cerebrum , thalamus and hypothalamus. It doesn’t give rise to spinal cord. So the option is incorrect.
Medulla:- it is the structure from where the spinal cord arises. So the option is correct.
Pons:- it is the part of the midbrain. It carries signals from the forebrain to the cerebellum. Hence the option is not correct.
Cerebellum:- it helps to maintain posture and balance of the body. Spinal cord does not originate from this. Hence this option is not correct.
Our correct option is b that is medulla.
Note: In the cross section the spinal cord has an outer portion that is called white matter of the cord. The inner portion is Gray matter. From Gray matter a central canal runs that is filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The central canal connects with cavities of the brain which are also filled with this fluid. The white matter consists of long myelinated nerve fibres running up and down the spinal cord and delivering and receiving the information to and from the brain.
This way the spinal cord connects with the brain and nerves that stretch throughout the body.
