S.N Banerjee was selected as Professor in English at Calcutta in the Metropolitan Institute.S.N. Banerjee was born in Calcutta on November 10, 1848 in the province of Bengal. His father Durga charan Banerjee, who was a doctor, had influenced him deeply in liberal , progressive thinking. He completed his graduation from the university of Calcutta and travelled to England in 1868.He qualified the Indian Civil Service examination in 1871.He was an intelligent orator and writer.In 1876 , he was appointed professor of English. He joined free Church college as professor of English literature in 1881.He was fully engaged in active teaching work for 37 years of his life ( i.e, from 1875- 1912 ). He was appointed as assistant magistrate in Sylhet and also attended classes at university college, London. In 1874, He returned to London and became a student at the Middle empire. He was eliminated for making minor judicial error and went to England to appeal his discharge but he was unsuccessful because of the racial discrimination faced.
He was a great influencer, educationist with a missionary zeal. HE gave much more importance to education than politics .After becoming a teacher, , he began to deliver speeches on nationalist, liberal , political subjects and Indian history.
