Hint: We will first note down all the three distances covered by Satish in three different modes. After that, we will write them in decimal form according to their place one below another and then just carry out the normal addition.
Complete step by step answer:
We see that Satish covered a distance of 32 km 15 m by car, 104 km 20 m by train and 1.5 km on foot.
So, he has traveled through 3 different modes.
Distance travelled by him using car = 32 km 15 m
Distance travelled by him using train = 104 km 20 m
Distance travelled by him using foot = 1.5 km
We know that 1 km = 1000 m.
So, 1.5 km will be equivalent to = $1.5 \times 1000 = 1500m$
So, this will become 1000 m and 500 m which is equal to 1 km 500 m.
This can be written as: Distance travelled by him using foot = 1 km 500 m.
Now, we will add the km and meters separately:
The distance he travelled in km is:-
Car $= 32 km$
Train$ = 104 km$
Foot $=1 km$
Adding all these, we will get: $32 + 104 + 1 = 137 km.$
The distance he travelled in meters is:
Car $= 15 m$
Train $= 20 m$
Foot $= 500 m$
Adding all these, we will get:$ 15 + 20 + 500 = 535 m$
Now, combining both, we will get that:-
Satish travelled a total of $137 km 535 m$.
Since, we need the answer is kilometers. So, we will convert the m into km.
Since, 1 m = $\dfrac{1}{{1000}}km$
So, we have 535 m = $\dfrac{{535}}{{1000}}km$
Simplifying the RHS, we will have: $535 m = 0.535 km$
Therefore, Satish travelled a total of 137 km + 0.535 km that is equal to 137.535 km.
Note:
Alternate method: Let us discuss the alternate method for the same question.
We will first convert all the distances into meters and then add then casually as we add general numbers. After that, we will convert the answer we got as a result of addition into km and thus, we have the answer. Let us see how this is done now:
Distance travelled by car $= 32 km 15 m$
Since, $1 km = 1000 m.$
So, the distance will be $32000 + 15 = 32015 m.$
Similarly, distance traveled by train = $104020 m$.
And distance traveled by foot = $1500 m.$
Now, adding all of these, we will get:-
Distance covered = ($32015 + 104020 + 1500$) m
On simplifying it, we will have:
So, the distance covered is $137535 m$.
Dividing it by $1000$ to convert into kilometers.
Distance $= 137.535 km$.
