Hint: Respiration is a chemical process that uses oxygen and produces carbon dioxide in return. This is an energy giving reaction. Respiration can be said to be one of the most fundamental processes in both plants and animals. Plants and animals both have different ways for respiration.
Complete answer:
Additional information:
The carbon dioxide released during the process of respiration in plants is again utilized by them during photosynthesis. As for the animals the carbon dioxide is released from the body.
As discussed earlier the respiration takes place through stomata by the process of diffusion. In animals’ proper respiratory organs are present.
Note: As it is observed in animals some plants also have breathing surfaces which are moist and very thin and also cover a large area for gas exchange by diffusion. Plants are a very huge and important source for oxygen as during day time they give out oxygen and take carbon dioxide. Hence it can be said that they play a major role in maintaining the carbon dioxide level. So, it is said to grow more trees in order to control pollution.
Complete answer:
| Plant respiration | Animal respiration |
| The process of breathing is absent in plants instead they respire via their leaves. | Animals show breathing processes and show cellular respiration. |
| Plants take oxygen directly from the surrounding through stomata. | Animals breathe oxygen from their nostrils and for a few animals’ gills which are then directed to the respiratory organs. |
| The respiration rate is slow. | The respiratory rate is high. |
| When plants perform photosynthesis, they release oxygen as a byproduct. | Animals take oxygen from the air inhaled from the surrounding |
| As for the respiratory organs in plants other than stomata they can respire through roots, leaves and lenticels. | The organs mostly responsible for breathing in animals are lungs and gills. |
| The amount of heat produced is less in case of plants. | The amount of heat produced is more in animals. |
| Plants can produce their own glucose while photosynthesis. | When the breakdown of carbohydrates takes place animals obtain glucose. |
