Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, best known by his pen name Munshi Premchand, was an Indian writer famous for his contemporary Hindustani literature. He is one of the most celebrated authors of the Indian subcontinent and is considered to be one of the leading Hindi writers of the early twentieth century. His novels include Godaan, Karmabhoomi, Gaban, Mansarovar, and Idgah. In 1907, he published his first collection of five short stories in a book called Soz-e Watan. Premchand is considered the first Hindi author whose writings featured realism prominently. The concerns of the poor and the urban middle-class are portrayed in his novels. His works portray a rationalistic perspective that sees religious beliefs as something that causes the poor to be manipulated by strong hypocrites. To increase public awareness of national and social problems, he used literature and also wrote on issues relating to corruption, child widowhood, adultery, the caste system, poverty, colonization, and the Indian independence struggle. In his last days, as seen in the novel Godan (1936) and the short-story collection Kafan (1936), he concentrated on rural life as a stage for complex drama. In comparison to the "feminine quality" tenderness and sentiment of contemporary Bengali literature, Premchand claimed that social realism was the way of Hindi literature.
