Hint: Pulmonary veins are responsible for carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs when blood is purified in the lungs towards the heart whereas on other hand pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood from the heart towards the lungs for their oxygenation or purification.
Complete answer:
Veins are types of blood vessels which carry blood towards the Heart. These carry deoxygenated blood from tissues back to the heart. Pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood from lungs to the left atrium where it is returned to the systemic circulation. Veins carry deoxygenated blood from our body towards the heart which further moves to lungs and gets oxygenated, but we have two exceptions in veins and arteries when their functions get altered. These exceptions involve “Pulmonary Veins and Pulmonary Arteries”.
There are four pulmonary veins, two from either lung. Each pulmonary vein is linked with a network of capillaries in the alveoli which joins together to form a single blood vessel from the lobe of the lung. The right pulmonary veins pass behind the right atrium and superior vena cava while the left part passes in front of the descending thoracic aorta. Despite carrying oxygenated blood this is considered a vein because it carries blood towards the heart. This process of blood from being deoxygenated and further getting oxygenated depends upon these exceptional pulmonary arteries and veins.
Note: Pulmonary veins and umbilical veins are the exceptions as it carries oxygenated blood to the heart. Anomalous pulmonary venous connection is a congenital defect of the pulmonary vein. Pulmonary veins play an important role in respiration by receiving oxygenated blood in the alveoli and draining it into the left atrium.
