India is the world’s second largest producer of sugar. The largest producer is Brazil. India however is the largest consumer of sugar. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka are the highest sugar producing states in the country.
There are 732 sugar mills in the country out of which more than 60 per cent are in Uttar Pradesh. The first sugar mill of India was established in 1904 at Saran in Bihar. The largest sugar mill in Asia as of today is the Triveni Sugar Mill in Khatauli.
