The German-speaking Community(Deutschsprachige Gemeinschaft-DG) is one of Belgium's federated entities. The DG is situated in the eastern part of Belgium, occupying an area of 854 km2 along the national borders with Germany, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Approximately 77,000 people live in the nine municipalities of the DG, at the intersection of two cultures:-
German and Latin, which illustrates why East Belgians have been said to "work like Prussians but live like French."
As a state with legislative powers, the DG retains a strong autonomy with the parliament, the government and the civil service. The DG is mainly responsible for cultural problems, schooling, vocational training and jobs, family and social services, and oversees local authorities.
German was the main language of the city when the German forces invaded Belgium during the First World War, but French was restored in 1918. German was the only language for schooling, administration and law in the eastern communities until 1945. Since Belgium regained its independence the German language largely vanished from public life.
