Settlements are areas where people construct their dwellings. Early humans lived in caves and on trees. When early humans began farming, they had to establish a permanent residence. Civilizations arose in this manner. Because of the abundance of water and the fertility of the terrain, towns sprang up near river valleys.

Two kinds of settlements are Temporary and permanent settlements.
Temporary settlements are those that are only occupied for a limited period of time. Transitory communities include deep forests, hot and frigid deserts, and mountains. People who live in these makeshift villages engage in activities such as hunting, gathering, shifting farming, and transhumance.
