Hint:Recall that the acceleration is the rate of change of velocity with respect to time. It is a vector quantity. It will have both magnitude and direction. An object is said to be accelerating if it changes its velocity. If an object is moving in a circular path at a constant speed, it is said to be accelerating.

Complete step by step answer:
Step I:
The direction of acceleration of a body depends on two main things:
-Whether the object is moving in a positive or negative direction.
-Whether the object is speeding up or slowing down.

Step II:
If the body is having negative acceleration, then the body will slow down. The direction of the acceleration will be in an opposite direction to that of the direction of velocity. In this case, the body will move in a negative direction. The velocity of the body will decrease.

Step III:
This happens if some external force is applied in a direction opposite to the velocity. For example when brakes are applied, the velocity of the car decreases and then it stops.
The other name of negative acceleration is retardation.

Note:It is important to remember that the term retardation is also known as deceleration. The sign of the acceleration will depend on it’s direction. If the original velocity of the body is positive and final velocity is zero, then the acceleration of the body will be negative. If the object is decreasing its velocity by an equal magnitude in equal intervals of time, then it is said to be moving with negative deceleration.
