The High court operates out of a red brick building known as Attara Kacheri. Poornima Dasharathi, founder of the building, when Chikkadevraja Wadiyar, inspired by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s style of governance, created eighteen administrative departments called as aka kacheris, thus the name Attara Kacheri literally translates to eighteen departments.
It is built in Greco-Roman style by the then chief engineer Richard Hieram Sankey. The plans were revived in the year 1864 under Lewin Bentham Bowring, and the offices became functional by 1868. The building came about long after the administrative offices were relocated to Srirangapatna after Tipu sultan’s death in the year 1799 and the cantonment was formed in 1809.On the right opposite of the structure is the building of the Vidhana Soudha in the year 1956.
