Complete answer: The great one-horned rhinoceros is also known as the Indian rhino and it is the largest of the rhino species. It is commonly found in India, Pakistan, Bhutan and Nepal. In dia, they are specifically found in Assam. Kaziranga national park is known for them in particular. Once it was widely spread across the northern region of Indian subcontinent but then they were hunted and killed for sports or as agricultural pests which led to their extinction and by the 20th century only 200 one-horned rhinos remained.
Saving them from extinction is known to be one of the greatest successes in conservation of animals in the whole of Asia. Currently there are about 3700 rhinos in Terai, Nepal and northeastern region of India. Their distinctive feature is their single black horn of course and it is about 5-25 inches long. The horn has a grey-brownish hide with skin folds which gives it an armor plated appearance. The reason for their reduction in enormous amounts was caused by the disappearance of alluvial plain grasslands. This is still a concern because of the growing human population for fulfillment of their requirements.

Note: Poaching of rhinos is another issue to be taken care of for rhinos are killed and it is illegal to trade rhino horns. Although there is no scientific proof but there is great value of horn in terms of Asian medicines for treatment of fever, cancer and epilepsy.
