The most polluted river in Maharashtra is Panchganga, which in English translates to ‘five rivers’. It is one of the most important rivers located in Karnataka coastal and Maharashtra. It is a major tributary of Krishna River. It starts from Prayag Sangam after receiving waters from the four tributaries namely, the Kasari, the Kumbhi, the Tulsi and the Bhogawati. According to local traditions, an underground stream of the Saraswati also joins it and hence the name Panchganga. The Prayag Sangam confluence is also the worshiping place for pilgrims. It is mostly visited by people during the winters.
