Roots are part of the plant and are mainly responsible for anchoring it down into the ground and help in absorbing the essential minerals, nutrients, and water from the soil. It is also used to store food. Roots hold the soil together and help in preventing soil erosion. Some plants have their roots growing above the ground which are called aerial roots. These roots are also responsible for absorbing nutrients, anchoring and affixing the plant by supporting them to the structures such as nearby walls, rocks, etc. Roots are of two types: tap root and fibrous root.
Tap Root System: In the taproot system small lateral roots called root hairs are attached to the main central root. Mustard, carrot, beetroot, china rose and all dicotyledons are examples of taproot systems.
Fibrous Root System: These types of roots are found in grasses and all monocotyledons where root systems consist of large numbers of roots which are almost equal in size. These types of roots are usually bushy and they branch from the stem. Rice, wheat and marigold are other examples
