Hint :A double displacement reaction is a reaction in which two different compounds in aqueous form, exchange their ions and form two new and different compounds. Neutralization is a reaction used to neutralize acids or bases and precipitation is a reaction in which the new formed compound is insoluble in the solution.
Complete Step By Step Answer:
The correct answer to this question is yes, neutralization and precipitation reactions are double displacement reactions. Let us first see what these reactions are.
Neutralization reaction is a reaction in which acid or base is neutralized. Suppose we have an acid, by adding base to it the solution will be neutralized, similarly when we add an acid to base the solution will be neutralized.
When the acid and base are mixed, two new compounds formed are salt and water. The salt dissolves in water and thus a new solution is formed in which ions from the reactants are exchanged and new products are formed.
Precipitation reaction is a reaction in which two compounds exchange their ions in aqueous form and one of the newly formed compounds is insoluble in the solution. Therefore the insoluble compound is collected at the bottom and they are called precipitates.
In the precipitation reaction too, the ions get exchanged in their aqueous solution and thus it is also a double displacement reaction.
A simple and general formula of double displacement reaction can be given as shown below.
Here, let us suppose that B and D are ions. The ions are interchanged and thus this is called a double displacement reaction.
Note :
Examples of double displacement reaction in neutralization can be given by mixing vinegar and baking soda, and an example of precipitation double displacement reaction can be given by reaction of lead nitrate and potassium iodide.
It is not necessary that neutralization and precipitation are always double displacement reactions, they can be single displacement reactions too.
The other types of double displacement reactions are acid-carbonate reactions, alkylation and counter-ion exchange.
