 The Nathpa Jhakri Hydel Power Project began in 1993. It is a 1530 MegaWatt installation in Kinnaur and Shimla of Himachal Pradesh situated on the upper reaches of Sutlej river.
As Himachal Pradeshis extremely rich in hydro resources, this makes the states a great potential for hydroelectric power. For Nathpa Jhakri Project, a 60.5 meters high dam was built and an underground desilting complex. This plant supplies electricity in Himachal Pradesh and Northern Regional Grid states in India. There is a headrace tunnel 27.4km before the dam which is one of the largest in the country.
Originally, it was planned for a construction time of 5 years but there was a need for stabilisation work so the design had to be modified which led to increment in construction time and the project was completed in the year 2004. The distribution of electricity is managed by Northern regional load dispatch centres. The construction cost of the project was 8000 crores. Nathpa Jhakri is the largest and longest headrace tunnel, Desilting chamber, surge shaft and underground power. There is a Francis turbine generator which also is largest known and it also went online in March 2004.
