Blood is the fluid that flows in our body to provide oxygen, water, air etc. It is a fluid connective tissue. The 55% of blood is plasma whereas the rest 45% is the formed elements. Plasma is the liquid in the blood made of 90 % water. The cells like RBC’s, WBC’s are suspended in the plasma.
The forms elements of the blood include-
1. Erythrocytes – These are the red blood cells which have the haemoglobin in them. It gives a blood-red colour. They are small, biconcave cells which become thick at the circumference. These shapes will make them flexible and elastic to pass through various vessels, especially capillaries to diffuse the gases. The main function is to transport oxygen to the body
2. Leukocytes – These are the white blood cells, which are less in number than the red blood cells. They are slightly greater than the erythrocytes in size. They are the immunity cells having phagocytic properties. They produce antibodies and fight against foreign cells. They inhibit the inflammatory process as they are defence cells.
3. Platelets – They are also called thrombocytes. They are small fragments of the large cells (megakaryocytes). They develop from the red bone marrow. They stick together to form plugs like structure which will cover and repair any tear in the vessel. They initiate the making of blood clots.

There are various types of leukocytes in our body like neutrophils; which will fight against infections, basophils; which form the body immune response, eosinophils; defend against the parasitic infection. Monocytes remove the foreign and dying cells from our body. Lymphocytes make the defence system of the body.
