Hint: Tongue is present in the mouth or oral cavity. It is attached to the base of mouth by a fold called lingual frenulum. The V-shaped furrow is known as sulcus terminalis, which divides the upper surface of the tongue into the anterior part and posterior pharyngeal part. The top of the sulcus terminalis possesses a small pit called foramen caecum.
Complete answer:
On the tongue of a man have four types of papillae which are little projections.
> Vallate papillae: It is also known as circumvallate papillae which are the largest known papillae out of four known papillae and they are 8 to 12 in numbers and each of the papillae bears up to 100 taste buds.
> Filiform papillae: These papillae are the smallest and numerous out of four types of papillae. These are conical in shape and present nearly centre and the upper surface of the tongue and these papillae contain touch receptors instead of taste receptors.
> Fungiform papillae: These papillae are less numerous than filiform papillae and small rounded papillae, these are most numerous near the tip of the tongue and each of these papillae contain five taste buds.
> Foliate papillae: These appear as leaf-like and located at the side of the base of the tongue. On the side of the border, four to five folds are present and their taste buds degenerate in early childhood.
Hence, the correct answer is option (B).
Note: Human tongue has four taste areas such as sweet, sour, salt and bitter, the area of sweet and salt are overlapped. The human tongue helps chewing the food and aids in swallowing the food, it plays a key role in speech and it acts as an organ of taste.
