Nagarjuna Sagar Multipurpose Project dam is built on Krishna river in the Andhra Pradesh state. This dam is one of the world's largest and tallest Masonry dams. It straddles the border between the Nalgonda district in the Telangana State and Guntur district in the Andhra Pradesh State. It was constructed between 1955 and 1967. This dam had created a large water reservoir. It has the gross storage capacity of 11.472 billion cubic metres. It is 180 m tall from its deepest foundation and also 1.6 km long. It has 26 flood gates each of 13 m width and 14 m tall. This project has a catchment area of approximately 215000 sq. km area. It boasts the largest canal system network in India too.

This dam was the earliest in the series of large infrastructure projects termed as the modern temples. It was initiated for achieving the Green Revolution in India. It is also considered as one of the earliest multi-purpose irrigation and hydro-electric projects in India.
