Hint: To solve this question we will first of all compute total cost of confectionery goods after adding sales tax of 6%. Similarly, we will calculate the total cost of other items by applying Sales tax of 10% on them. 10% of x = \[\dfrac{10}{100}\times x\]. Finally we will obtain total cost by adding above obtained values and then subtract from 500 to get the result.

Complete step by step answer:
Given that the price of confectionary goods that she bought is Rs.165.
The Sales tax on it was 6%.
\[\Rightarrow \] Sales tax is 6% of Rs.165.
\[\Rightarrow \] The total price of confectionary goods is,
= 165 + 6% of 165
= 165 + \[\dfrac{6}{100}\times 165\]
= 165 + 6 \[\times \] 1.65
= 174.90
\[\therefore \] The total price of confectionary goods adding the sales tax is Rs.174.90 – (1).
Now given that price of tooth – paste, shaving – cream, soap etc is Rs.230.
The Sales tax on it was 10%.
The Sales tax is 10% of Rs.230.
The total price of tooth – paste, shaving – cream etc is,
Rs.230 + 230 \[\times \] 10%
= Rs.230 + \[\dfrac{10}{100}\times 230\]
= 230 + 10 \[\times \] 2.30
= 253
\[\therefore \] The total price of confectionary goods adding the sales tax is Rs.253. – (2)
Hence the total amount to be paid by Mrs. Sharma can be obtained by adding values in equation (1) and equation (2).
The total amount paid by Mrs. Sharma = Rs.253 + Rs.174.90 = Rs.427.90.
Now since Mrs. Sharma gave a note of 500 to the shopkeeper then the money that the shopkeeper will return to Mrs. Sharma is obtained by subtracting 427.90 to 500.
So we have, 500 – 427.90 = Rs.72.10
The money he will return to Mrs. Sharma is Rs.72.10 which is option (a).

Note:
Students can get confused while calculating the total cost of each item after applying sales tax.
Remember that as sales tax of confectionary goods and that of other items differ, so we cannot add the cost 165 and 230 and then apply the sales tax 6% and 10%.
Suppose this is done then cost = 165 + 230 = 395.
And total tax = 6 + 10 = 16%.
Then we have, 395 + 395 \[\times \] 16%
= 395 + \[\dfrac{16}{100}\times 395\]
= 395 + 16 \[\times \] 3.95
= 458.2
Which is not what we have as an answer. So always remember to apply sales tax separately.
