
Mr. Gupta wanted to make a border for his bulletin board. He marked the border to help him figure out the perimeter of the board. What is the perimeter (in feet) of Mr. Gupta’s bulletin board?

Hint: To solve such a question we first of all analyse the given shape of the board and after doing so we use the formula of determining the perimeter and apply it to calculate the required perimeter value.

Analysing the figure, we get that the length of the board is greater than the breadth of the board which implies that the given figure is not a square but a rectangle.
So, we obtain that Mr. Gupta’s board is rectangle in shape and therefore, we apply the formula of perimeter of a rectangle which is given by,
Perimeter P = 2(l+b), where l is the length of the given rectangle and b is the breadth of the given rectangle.
Again, analysing the figure, we get that one foot is given as a difference of mark between 2 given marks, then by this explanation we get that the breadth is 7 feet long because there are 6 fixed marks on the breadth or the smaller side of the bulletin board. And similarly, we get that the length is 8 feet long because there are 7 fixed marks on the length or the greater side of the bulletin board.
Hence, we obtain the length l = 8 feet and the breadth b = 7 feet which gives the perimeter as,

& P=2(8+7) \\
& \Rightarrow P=2(15) \\
& \Rightarrow P=30feet \\

Note: The possibility of error in this question is counting the marks as one foot which would be wrong as two successive marks give one foot. therefore, the number of marks will always be less than the total feet obtained on one or both sides of the rectangle.
