Let us first understand what a metal is. Metal is a substance which is found at the bottom of the earth. Metals are those substances which are formed from the substance that were not alive. Metals are considered to be inorganic.
Let us see some of the characteristics of the metals:
- All metals will exist in the solid state except for one which is mercury. Mercury is present in the liquid state in the room temperature. No metals are present in the gaseous state.
- Metals are found to be good conductors of the heat and electricity.
- Metals are found to be ductile in nature as they can be drawn into a wire.
- Metals are also found to be malleable in nature as they can be beaten into a thin sheet.
- Metals are sonorous as they can produce deep ringing sound.
- Metals are found to be lustrous in nature as they can be very shiny in appearance.
From the above characteristics we can say that Mercury is the only metal which is present in the liquid state compared to others. This shows how the mercury is different from the other metallic elements.
