The principle duty or the responsibility of Tehsildar (A Tehsildar is also known as an Executive Magistrate of the concerned tehsil) is to collect land revenue(rent) , canal revenue, cesses, and other government dues and perform other duties connected therewith in accordance with the rules such as the government may from time to time describe.
A land revenue officer at the district level is known as Tehsildar. Generally he supervises the work given to the Patwari and makes sure that the land records are properly maintained and land revenue is collected on time.
Some other principal duties of Tehsildar are:
1. To keep all government money and property in safe custody which may be placed in his charge.
2. To supervise and test the land records work in his Tehsil in accordance with the rules in the “land records manual”.
3. To see that the rules in the “Land Records Manual '' prescribing the duties of supervisor kanungos and lekhpals are properly carried out or not.
5. To collect the supplies for troops which are marching through the tehsil.
6. To report to the Sub-Divisional Officer.

The selection of candidates for Deputy Tehsildar posts is done on the basis of their performance in the Academic, and the performance in their exams. Personal Interview (Personality Test) is also taken.
