Producers, also known as autotrophs, are animals that provide their food. They obtain energy from additives or the sun and turn it into usable energy in the form of sugar or food with the aid of water. Plants are the most typical example of a manufacturer. Green plants use sunlight and water to produce a source of sugar known as glucose by a mechanism known as photosynthesis. Green plants, such as trees, are present on the land, but they can also live underwater if adequate sunlight is available. The main sources on land are plants and lichens. In temperate and tropical climates, the principal sources are trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, mosses, and liverworts. Lichens – symbiotic species made up of photosynthesizing algae or cyanobacteria and fungi – are the main producers in the Arctic, where plants are not as well suited to live.
