Migration is defined as the activity of people across regions and territories. It is a crucial determinant of population shift as it not only alters the size of population but also influences the population texture of urban and rural regions.
Migration can be internal and international. Internal migration exists within the country and international migration exists between the countries.
The types of migration are:-
Immigration and Emigration:- When people from one nation move permanently to another country, for example, if people from India move to the United States of America then it is termed as Immigration for America, whereas for India it is termed as Emigration.
In-migration and Out-migration: In-migration implies migration existing within a particular area only, while out-migration means migration out of the area. Both types of migration are called internal migration occurring within the country. Migration from Bihar to Bengal is in-migration for Bengal, while it is out- migration for Bihar.
Gross and Net Migration:- During any time period, the total number of persons arriving in the country and the total number of people leaving the country for inhabiting is called gross migration. The difference between the total number of persons coming to inhabit a country and leaving the country for residing during any time period is termed as net migration.
Internal Migration and External Migration:- Internal migration implies the movement of people in different states and areas within a country from one place to another. On the other hand, external or international migration implies the activity of people from one country to another for permanent settlement.

Note:The most common reason for migration in India is marriage. According to Census 2011, 46% of the total migrants moved because of marriage and 97% of them were women.
The 'Garib Kalyan Rozgar Abhiyaan' and 'Atma Nirbhar Rozgar Abhiyan' are some of the Governmnet schemes launched by the Modi Governmnet for the migrants.
Maharashtra records the highest migration in India and Florida records the highest migration in the world.
