Kasturba was born into the family of a wealthy businessman Porbandar Gokuladas Kapadia and married Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.Both was thirteen years old when they married. When Gandhi left to study in London in 1888, she remained in India to raise their newborn son Harilal. She had three more sons: Manilal (1892), Ramdas (1897), Devdas (1900). In 1904, in South Africa Kasturba Gandhi first involved herself with politics. In South Africa, she took part in protests against the ill-treatment of Indian immigrants, in 1913.
Kasturba Gandhi and her husband Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi left South Africa in July 1914 and returned to live in India. In 1917, Bihar where Gandhi was working with indigo farmers, Kasturba worked on the welfare of women in Champaran. Kasturba took part in a non-violent protest against British rule in Rajkot in 1939. After the women in the city specifically asked her to advocate for them. Kasturba was arrested by Britishers once again, and kept her in solitary confinement for a month.
