It was known as MetSat-1 but on February 5, 2003, it was renamed to Kalpana I by the then Prime Minister of India, Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in the memory of Kalpana Chawla- a NASA astronaut who perished in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. Kalpana I is ISRO’s first dedicated GEO weather satellite project built by ISRO. So far meteorological services have been combined with telecommunication and television services in the INSAT series. This satellite is developed out of a small 1-1000 bus made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic light weight structure.
