The coconut tree is a large palm tree that is capable of producing at least 75 fruits per year under proper growth conditions. The coconut fruit is a drupe and not a true nut. Like all traditional fruits it also comprises three layers- the endocarp, the exocarp and the mesocarp. The exocarp and mesocarp together make up the husk of the coconut and the endocarp makes up the hard shell. The interior of the endocarp is covered by a brown seed coat and is filled with liquid endosperm. This liquid endosperm keeps depositing along the wall of the endocarp and ultimately forms the edible solid endosperm. Thus coconut fruit does not bear a traditional seed but in botanical terms it does have a seed as it possesses all parts of the seeds. A mature coconut fruit weighs about 1.4 kg. coconut trees require a warm climate for growth and are not able to survive in cold regions. The prevalent conditions required for proper growth are- average temperature of 12-13 degrees centigrade, average rainfall above 1000mm and direct sunlight.
